Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA) Events

ITAC and GSA Conference   April 14 - 15, 2009
ITAC and GSA Conference | April 14 - 15, 2009

Everyday life in the 21st Century is not exactly what was envisaged in the early 1960's TV shows like Star Trek and the Jetsons but technology is impacting every aspect of our lives, both working and social - and not always for the better!

However, much as we would like the pace of change to slow down, there is no sign of this happening anytime soon - so get ready for a whole new generation of technologies which will impact our lives: quantum computing, solar energy, green-tech, mobile 4th Gen Broadband, and imaging solutions.

This year's Forum will provide an opportunity to get an advance look at some of the most exciting emerging technologies and allow us to understand the impact of the underlying microelectronics–based advancements that enable these technologies:  nano-electronics, photonics, MEMS, biotech and much more.

Join us as experts from global enterprises discuss the opportunities for microelectronics companies as emerging technologies get ready to change consumers' lives.

Attend the MEMS Interest Group Kick-Off Meeting

Date: Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Time: 4:00 p.m. (After the Closing Remarks)

Location: Delta Hotel

GSA has collaborated with MEMS leaders in creating an interest group to collaborate and drive solutions to the challenges faced by MEMS today. Academic leaders who have helped facilitate the commercialization of MEMS technology as well as companies that play an integral role in the industrial food chain, including semiconductor companies (Fabless and IDM), foundries, equipment manufacturers, OEMs, component suppliers, etc. should take part in this exciting kick-off meeting and be a part of a dynamic team of experts.

MEMs Interest Group Objective:

The GSA MEMS Interest Group will explore how the semiconductor industry has increasingly entered into the MEMS field as a potential future growth area as the industry experiences unprecedented restructuring. Many companies are considering changing their business model and investigating high-value/high-growth market opportunities moving forward. The Group seeks to help promote and support the continued commercialization of MEMS as a critical enabling technology.

In the context of commercialization, the Group will explore the interaction between various companies in the MEMS user/supplier networks of select industries, while also following how this important enabling technology is being adopted by a wide variety of industries. This will include the growth of start-up companies in this area and how they interact with large established firms. The GSA MEMS Interest Group’s goal is to be a leading market intelligence source to provide market and industry knowledge from a global perspective.

Guided Tours Included

DALSA Applications Laboratory

With revenues of over $200 million in 2008, DALSA is a true world leader in high performance digital imaging and semiconductors. On April 14th, as part of the ITAC and GSA Conference, take an up-close look at the company's operations in Waterloo. Tour the R&D labs and manufacturing facility, and speak to the engineers, scientists, and executives who have put DALSA clearly on the international technology map.

Institute for Quantum Computing

“Seeing is believing”

You will be guided through 4 labs investigating:

  • Integrated quantum devices where the goal is to develop a unique test bed for characterization of superconducting and photonic quantum devices and circuits;
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance where a successful a 12-spin benchmark has just been completed.
  • Photonic entanglement where the first photon anti-bunching curve was obtained with a pulsed laser, a single photon source has been demonstrated and single quantum dots emission lines have been observed on a CCD camera.
  • Quantum key distribution where the goal is to create a continuously operating quantum key distribution link between the Institute for Quantum Computing at one end and the Perimeter Institute at the other!
