Ming-Kai Tsai serves as the chairman of MediaTek Inc. Tsai was one of the founding management team when MediaTek spun off from UMC in 1997, and has served as chairman of the company since that time. Under his leadership and guidance, MediaTek has undergone significant growth over consequent years, and is now listed and traded on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
Prior to his work with MediaTek, Tsai was the design manager of Electronic Research & Service Organization at the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), where he managed the microcomputer IC design department.
He joined UMC in 1983, as director of R&D. From 1989 to 1994, he served the company as the executive vice president of a business unit that covered computer, communication, consumer and memory. Later in 1994, Tsai was promoted to president of UMC's 2nd business group, overseeing the development of the company's memory, consumer and multimedia business units.
Tsai earned his bachelor's in electrical engineering from Taiwan University, R.O.C. and his master's in electrical engineering from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio.
